Making the Hard Decisions

Service Dog Handler Symposium Panel
Making the Hard Decisions

Panel Speakers: Penny Beeman, Cindy Campbell, Pine Irwin, & Ashley Lambert

This is a 2 hr replay of a conversation where we discuss some pretty difficult topics that many Service Dog Handlers face.
  • When do you transition your dog from early socialization style outings to public access training based outings? What do you want your team to be before you begin in non-pet friendly places.
  • Describe your loose leash or heelzone type behavior that you want from your SD/SDiT before moving into public access training.
  • What type of gear do you use? Leashes, harnesses, labels, etc? This led to a conversation on tasks being done on leash and off leash.
  • How much flash, bright coloring, and fun gear are you comfortable with on your dog?
This is a very long discussion, so please feel free to break it down in bits with lots of breaks.

Our goal in having this conversation is not to judge you or any other team for your decisions, but more to encourage teams to think about some of the implications that may be related to the choices we make.

We in no way want to exclude any handler from benefitting from the help of a Service Dog simply because you don't have access to the "stuff" you think you need to have or the choices you make for your team. Our goal is merely to have a safe place to have the difficult conversations so that we may learn from each other with compassion, awareness, knowledge, and empathy!
